Times Buys Serial, PM20 Finally Cancelled

By JAGinDetroit on July 23, 2020

My piece of advice this week – do not use copyrighted music in your podcast.  In a recent Facebook post in a Podcast Movement Group, Todd Cochrane of Blubrry posted the following on Thursday in the Podcast Movement Facebook group:

At Blubrry Podcasting we have seen more RIAA takedown notices over the past week than we have seen in the past 2 years combined. Music owners are waking up to the fact that unscrupulous podcasters have been putting full tracks of music in there shows as if they where a radio station. Some of the takedowns are against indie podcasters! Some are actual radio stations that have not taken music out of their podcast that they broadcast over the air.  You can be sure the RIAA will start accessing penalties on podcasters as they have in the past. While I am not allowed to say exactly how much Podcasters have already settled with labels for in excess of 100k for copyright violations.

Speaking of Podcast Movement, they finally decided to scrap this year’s in person conference.  If you bought at ticket, you can either get a refund, or apply it to next year’s conference in Nashville.  If you do THAT, as a thank you, you’ll get free admission to this year’s virtual conference in October.  Here’s their official announcement: https://podcastmovement.com/events/pm20-is-officially-canceled-but-were-still-getting-together-in-2020/?utm_source=podnews.net&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=podnews.net:2020-07-22

A couple of news pieces from Spotify – their Michelle Obama podcast launches Wednesday. https://podnews.net/press-release/michelle-obama?utm_source=podnews.net&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=podnews.net:2020-07-17

Also, Spotify is playing with video podcasts: https://newsroom.spotify.com/2020-07-21/spotify-fans-can-better-connect-to-creators-with-new-video-podcasts/?utm_source=podnews.net&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=podnews.net:2020-07-22

The New York Times has bought Serial, the company behind what was the “gateway” podcast for so many of us. https://www.nytco.com/press/serial-productions/?utm_source=podnews.net&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=podnews.net:2020-07-23

Edison Research’s Tom Webster says radio isn’t dying, but a market like Savannah, Georgia and its 52 radio stations might be better served to have…say, 3. https://tomwebster.substack.com/p/tower-defense-burning-boats-and-carrot
